Measurement & safe troubleshooting
Multimeters, loading & safe connections
The meter becomes part of the circuit you are measuring.
Measure voltage across two points with the voltage input. Measure current by opening the path and inserting the correctly fused current input in series, with power removed while changing connections. Measure resistance only with the circuit de-energized and stored charge safely discharged. Start with a current-limited, low-voltage isolated supply. Check the meter manual, lead condition, jack, range and category rating before connecting.
Oscilloscopes, probes & bandwidth
Separate a circuit’s behavior from the measuring system’s behavior.
An oscilloscope plots voltage against time. Set volts/div, time/div, coupling and trigger so the event is stable and visible. Match the probe attenuation setting and compensate passive probes as the manufacturer instructs. On a typical earth-referenced bench scope, probe grounds and channel grounds are connected to protective earth. Never defeat that earth connection or clip it onto an arbitrary live node.
Tolerance, uncertainty & a debugging method
A precise-looking number is not automatically an accurate one.
Resolution is the smallest displayed step; accuracy describes closeness to the true value under stated conditions. Repeatability is consistency, not proof of accuracy. Component tolerance gives an allowed range, not a probability distribution. When debugging, inspect with power off, verify supply and reference, compare expected and measured values, and divide the signal path into smaller sections. Change one thing at a time and record the conditions.
