Iso Xfmr
Provides galvanic separation between primary and secondary circuits. A 1:1 model provides approximately the same rated voltage under its specified conditions, not a touch-safe output. Touching both secondary conductors, or other hazardous points in the powered equipment, can still cause a serious or fatal shock.
Changing magnetic flux transfers energy between insulated windings. The turns ratio and load affect the output voltage. Interwinding capacitance still permits AC coupling; an appropriately connected electrostatic shield can reduce common-mode coupling. Isolation does not block every noise component or remove every possible current path in a complete system.
In plain terms
Like a pair of dancers connected by a hand-off rather than holding hands — the energy passes through, but if one trips on a wire the other isn't pulled down with them.
Why designers use it
- Separates circuits that require no direct conductive power connection.
- Can reduce certain ground-loop or common-mode-noise problems when the entire grounding arrangement is designed appropriately.
- Is used in specified service and medical-equipment arrangements, which have additional safety requirements.
Best for
- Audio gear
- Medical equipment
- Bench service
Key specifications
- Operating limits: Check the exact manufacturer's datasheet (A family name does not establish voltage, current, temperature or timing limits.)
- Pin assignment: Match the complete part and package code (A similar name or function does not guarantee the same wiring.)
- Mechanical fit: Use the exact package drawing (Check pad layout, dimensions and viewing direction before building.)
When not to use it
- As permission to work on exposed live circuits without suitable qualifications and safety procedures.
- As a substitute for medical-system isolation, leakage and fault-protection assessment.
- When the required rating, insulation system or application suitability has not been established.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an isolated secondary is safe to touch.
- Removing protective earth from an oscilloscope or other instrument to make it float.
- Ignoring how grounded test equipment can establish a new secondary reference.
- Treating a transformer's dielectric test voltage as a complete-system safety rating.
- Sizing only for average load without checking rated VA, inrush and protection requirements.
Where you will find it
- A service-bench isolation transformer may separate a device under test from the supply's direct earth reference. Grounded instruments can change that arrangement, and dangerous voltages remain within the device; this is not a beginner live-mains experiment.
A short history
Isolation transformers are used to separate power circuits while transferring AC energy. Their behaviour depends on insulation, winding capacitance, shielding and the system's grounding arrangement. Galvanic separation is a defined electrical property, not a blanket guarantee against electric shock.
Good to know
- Galvanic isolation means no direct conductive connection across the isolation barrier, not zero capacitive coupling.
- A 1:1 transformer changes the connection between circuits rather than intentionally stepping the voltage up or down.
