Env. Sensor

Reads several environmental parameters (T, RH, P, VOC/IAQ) on one die and exposes them via I²C/SPI. Vendors include calibration coefficients in OTP memory; the host MCU applies them to compute physical units.

Temperature: bandgap reference + ADC. Humidity: capacitive polymer dielectric whose value tracks adsorbed water. Pressure: piezoresistive MEMS diaphragm. Gas (BME680/688): heated metal-oxide film whose resistance changes with VOC concentration.

In plain terms

A weather station the size of a grain of rice: one chip, one I²C address, four readings.

A short history

Multi-sensor environmental ICs grew out of MEMS pressure sensors (Honeywell, Bosch — 1990s) and capacitive humidity sensing (Vaisala — 1970s, Sensirion — 2000s). Bosch's BMP/BME family has been the volume leader since the early 2010s.
