Barrel Jack

Barrel jacks accept a coaxial DC plug, the classic input for wall-adapter-powered hobby and consumer hardware where USB isn't appropriate.

Spring-loaded contacts wipe against mating pins as the connector closes, breaking through any oxidation. Housings keep the contacts aligned and offer strain relief, polarisation, and locking.

A short history

Detachable electrical connections predate modern electronic boards. Harvey Hubbell patented an electrical power plug in 1904. Today's connector families solve many different mechanical and electrical problems, so a familiar shape or shared pitch is not enough to establish mating compatibility or signal assignments.
