Film Cap

Film capacitors use a thin polymer dielectric for low loss and excellent stability, preferred in audio crossovers, snubbers, and timing circuits where accuracy matters.

Two conductive plates sit a sliver apart, separated by an insulator. Apply voltage and electrons pile up on one plate while the other plate gives them up — building an electric field that holds charge until something asks for it back.

In plain terms

Two foils rolled around a thin plastic film. Bulky, but quiet, accurate, and reliable for decades.

A short history

Film capacitors serve roles ranging from signal circuits to pulse handling, DC links and interference suppression. Those jobs require different constructions and approvals. A film dielectric alone does not make a part suitable for direct connection across the mains; the relevant safety-rated series must be specified.
